Regrouping and Locating the Enemy
As night fell on February 5, the fighting around Rocky Branch fizzled out. This section describes how both sides assessed the situation, regrouped, and considered what the next day would bring. I explore the confused role of the Confederate cavalry. During the morning of February 6, we learn how both sides tried to figure out what their opponents were doing. We discover how Rebel Brig. Gen. John Pegram undertook a curious movement that authors often misrepresent. I describe how, following a communication mix-up, Union Maj. Gen. Warren also initiated a perplexing maneuver. The consequences of Warren’s actions defined the entire battle, yet other accounts never critique his motives.
